Towards a Text-Centric Database Management System
Panagiotis G. Ipeirotis
Education: Unstructured data have been traditionally neglected by researchers and practitioners in many fields. Educating students, researchers, and professionals about the ability to query, process, and mine unstructured web data is a fundamental educational goal of this proposal. The goal will be pursued at multiple levels. The first step is to modernize the undergraduate curriculum in databases, and expose majors and non-majors to data-centric research. The second step is to create a graduate class that examines the transformative role of search technologies in business and society. The third step is to create an interdisciplinary graduate seminar that will educate Ph.D. students and other faculty members about methods and techniques for automatically analyzing unstructured data, which abound in many academic fields, such as economics, sociology, management, and so on, and which remain largely unexplored.
